• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

First-Generation means having to figure out the puzzle and making it our own. I sought mentorship early on to cut my learning curve and to gain insight from the stories my mentors lived. I like to think that I avoided many mistakes because of it. As a soon to be graduate, I feel a responsibility to share what I have learned with future First-Gen College Graduates.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

Meeting other Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) First gen alumni and soon to be graduates. This was over a panel and the breadth of experience gave me extra confidence that everything will be okay. Yes, as first gens we do not have all the answers, but we have the resources in the network we build.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

My parental units have kept me motivated. I drive 360 miles roundtrip to make it to my classes. I leave Palmdale the night before sometimes to not have to deal with traffic in the mornings. My reminder is that they worked crazy hours to get me through my k-12 education. Pushing through the extra mileage and time on the road is a small effort compared to what they had to do. My mother is a housekeeper and my father a factory worker.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

Dr. Hal Sorenson, Dr. Bill Rix, Stacey Williams and Kristin Liljestrom have been phenomenal in getting us through the AESE program! My peers, all working professionals and graduate students like me, come from all sorts of backgrounds and that is inspiring. To our team in our graduate project, Fisk Shogren, Kiran Shankaranarayana, Osama Karkokly, Ryan Gomez and Jongho Lee. Additional thanks to Sarah Al-Janabi and Maria Sandoval. The experience would not have been the same without you all!

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

Continue working for Northrop Grumman in a Systems Architect Engineering capacity. Within 3-5 years move into a managerial role for the Aeronautics Sector.

• ¿Qué significa para ti obtener tu título universitario como graduado de primera generación?

Primera-Generación significa tener que resolver el rompecabezas y hacerlo nuestro. Desde un inicio busqué mentores que me ayudaran a reducir mi curva de aprendizaje y obtener información valiosa de las historias que vivieron mis mentores. Quiero pensar que evité hacer muchos errores por esto. Estando tan cerca de graduarme, siento la responsabilidad de compartir lo que he aprendido con futuros Estudiantes Graduados de Primera Generación.

• ¿Cual es el momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UCSD?

Conocer otros alumnos egresados de Primera Generación de la Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) y próximos graduados. Esto fue en un panel, y la amplitud de esta experiencia me dio la confianza que necesitaba para saber que todo estará bien. Si, como estudiantes de primera generación no tenemos todas las respuestas, pero tenemos los recursos en las redes que construimos.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de tu familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Mis unidades parentales me han mantenido motivado. Manejo 360 millas de ida y vuelta para tomar mis clases. Algunas veces salgo de Palmdale la noche anterior para no tener que lidiar con el tráfico por las mañanas. Mi recordatorio es que ellos trabajaron largas jornadas para darme mi educación K-12. Hacer un esfuerzo por el kilometraje extra y el tiempo en el camino es un pequeño esfuerzo, comparado con lo que ellos tuvieron que hacer. Mi mamá es ama de casa y mi papá trabajador en una fábrica.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la comunidad de UCSD (profesores, educadores, mentores) que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Los doctores, Dr. Hal Sorenson, Dr. Bill Rix, Stacey Williams y Kristin Liljestrom han hecho un trabajo fenomenal en hacer posible nuestra experiencia en el programa AESE! Mis compañeros, todos profesionales que trabajan y son estudiantes de posgrado como yo, cada uno con diferentes historias y eso es inspirador. A nuestro equipo en el proyecto de posgrado, Fisk Shogren, Kiran Shankaranarayana, Osama Karkokly, Ryan Gomez y Jongho Lee. Muchas Gracias Sarah Al-Janabi y Maria Sandoval. • ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Continuar trabajando para Northrop Grumman en una posición como Ingeniero de Arquitectura de Sistemas. En los próximos 3-5 años avanzar a un rol de gerencia en el sector de Aeronáutica.
