• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

Where to begin! To me, being First-Generation College Graduate means that I get to have a chance at a stable and and financially prosperous life. It means that I get to be a leader or a role model for people who have a similar story as my own. Most importantly, I get to help my family in ways that I have always wanted to.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

My proudest moment here at UCSD was when I realized I had completed four successful years here. This is very broad but the reality is that accomplishing this was very difficult and at many points made me want to quit. I had to go through the most rigorous math classes and felt very confused and lost for most of them. Not only was I taking four classes per quarter but I was also working 20+ hour a week and competing in the UCSD Track and Field Team. At this point it's hard to visualize how I even went through all that successfully but I know something that always kept me going was a chance at a better life for me and anyone who I could potentially be a role model for.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

For me, family was the most influential. I have always wanted to be the one that helps my family by providing them with a financially stable life. They have always cheered me on and believed in me.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

I had a Student Success coach, James Carranza, that was always here for me. She listened to me while I felt that no one would and most importantly she understood me and validated me. She also made me aware of resources that I had no idea I had access too.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

Will be applying as an Actuary or potentially Grad school.

• ¿Qué significa para ti obtener tu título universitario como graduado de primera generación?

¡Por donde comenzar? Para mí, ser parte de la primera generación de graduados de la universidad significa que tengo la oportunidad de tener una vida estable y con prosperidad financiera. Significa que podré ser un líder o un modelo a seguir para la gente que viene de un contexto similar al mío. Sin embargo, lo más importante para mí es que podré ayudar a mi familia en la manera que siempre he querido.

• ¿Cual es el momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UCSD?

El momento de mayor orgullo para mi durante mi tiempo como estudiante fue cuando me di cuenta que había completado los cuatro años de estudios universitarios en UCSD. Podrá sonar bastante simple, pero la realidad es que lograrlo fue muy difícil para mí, ya que en varios momentos pensé en rendirme. Tuve que cursar clases de matemáticas muy rigurosas durante las cuales estuve muy confundido. No sólo cursé cuatro clases durante cada trimestre, pero también trabajé más de veinte horas a la semana y competí como parte del equipo de atletismo de UCSD. En retrospectiva, no sé cómo lo logré, pero sé que lo que siempre me dio ánimo para seguir fue que sabía que esta era mi oportunidad para tener una mejor vida y que podía ser un ejemplo a seguir para otras personas.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de tu familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Mi familia fue la que más influyó en mi. Siempre quise ser el que ayudara a mi familia y les diera una vida con estabilidad financiera. Ellos siempre me han apoyado y han creído en mi.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la comunidad de UCSD (profesores, educadores, mentores) que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Tuve una entrenadora de éxito, James Carranza, que siempre estuvo ahí para mi. Ella me escuchaba cuando yo sentía que nadie más lo hacía y aún más importante, siempre me entendió y validó mis sentimientos. También me ayudó a darme cuenta de que tengo otros recuersos.

• ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Voy a buscar trabajo de actuario o tal vez estudie un posgrado.
