• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

Being a First-Generation College Graduate means that I have my ancestors’ knowledge and wisdom to guide me through any obstacle. I owe a debt of gratitude to my family for always being there by my side and encouraging me to do everything that I set my mind to do. I have to set an example for my younger brothers about the various opportunities that they have at their disposal. There’s no limit to what they can do. We need people who want to share their experiences with young people and learn from them in return. My paternal grandparents taught me about unconditional love, gratitude, and courage, while my maternal grandparents taught me respect, perseverance, generosity, and love of God. Mi tío Chano taught me that family and the friendships that surround you are the most significant things in life.

Ser la primera graduada en mi familia estipula que tengo el conocimiento y la sabiduría de mis antepasados para superar cualquier obstáculo. Tengo una gran deuda de gratitud con mi familia por siempre estar a mi lado y por animarme a hacer todo lo que me he propuesto. Tengo que enseñarles a mis hermanitos las diversas oportunidades que tienen a su disposición. No hay un límite para lo que quieran ellos hacer. Necesitamos personas que quieran compartir sus experiencias con los jóvenes y también que aprendan de ellos. Mis abuelos paternos me enseñaron acerca del amor incondicional, la gratitud y ser valiente. Mis abuelos maternos me enseñaron el respeto, la perseverancia, la generosidad y el amor a Dios. Mi tío Chano me enseñó que lo más importante en la vida es la familia y las amistades que te rodean.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

I use my low economic status, my DACA status, the love of my family, and the love I have towards student development as a significant educational opportunity. The UCSD Department of Education Studies (EDS) and the Department of Mathematics are well known for its innovation that ensures that students “have the opportunity to become changemakers, equipped with the multidisciplinary tools needed to accelerate answers to our world’s most pressing issues.” I knew that I made the right choice as my family and I gazed at Geisel Library from Library Walk. That was my proudest moment at UCSD. I am a risk-taker and open-minded. I want to be the best version of myself through reflection and equitable education practices. We can give the necessary tools to students, so they can succeed and inspire millions of other people.

Utilizo mi posición de bajos ingresos, tener DACA, el amor de mi familia y el amor que le tengo por el desarrollo estudiantil como una oportunidad educativa muy importante. El Departamento de Estudios de Educación (EDS) y el Departamento de Matemáticas de la Universidad de California, San Diego (UCSD) son reconocidos por su innovación que garantiza que los estudiantes ""tengan la oportunidad de volverse en creadores que cambian al mundo, preparados con las herramientas multidisciplinarias necesarias para rápidamente obtener las respuestas de nuestro mundo"". Supe que tomé la decisión correcta cuando mi familia y yo mirábamos la Biblioteca Geisel desde la calle Library Walk. Ese fue mi momento de mayor orgullo en UCSD. Tomo riesgos y soy de mente abierta. Quiero ser la mejor versión de mí misma a través de la reflexión y las prácticas educativas y equitativas. Podemos darles las herramientas necesarias a los estudiantes para que tengan éxito y sean una inspiración para otros.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

My family has been my most significant influence throughout my journey. They’ve taught me values: love, respect, joy, strength, honesty, perseverance, and education. You only need passion to make a revolutionary change: graduate school for everyone. I loved going all over San Diego to tutor and apprentice at some of its brilliant schools, leading me to experience a diversity in identities. I thank my parents for being a motivation to graduate, giving wise advice, unconditional love, and not giving up on anything. Thank you so much! I employ these qualities at UCSD and in my job as Community Liaison/Office Assistance/Lunch Supervisor/Interpreter/ELD Support Teacher. All of this makes me pursue a career in education. I am a warrior, proud of her culture and identity.

Mi familia es quien más me ha influenciado a lo largo de mis años hasta la universidad. Ellos siempre me han enseñado valores: el amor, el respeto, la alegría, la fortaleza, la honestidad, la perseverancia y me han otorgado una educación. Solo necesitas pasión para hacer un cambio revolucionario el cual para mi es que todos terminen la universidad. Amé dar mis servicios como tutora y aprendiz en algunas de las excelentes escuelas por todo San Diego. Esto me llevó a vivir con una diversidad de identidades. Le agradezco a mi mamá y a mi papá por todas estas cosas: ser una motivación para graduarnos de la universidad, darnos buenos consejos llenos de sabiduría, su amor incondicional y no rendirse en frente de cualquier obstáculo. Le agradezco a Dios. ¡Muchísimas gracias! Puedes ver estos atributos en mí en UCSD y en mi trabajo como Enlace comunitario, asistente de oficina, supervisora de almuerzo, intérprete y maestra de inglés. Todo esto me hace esforzarme por ser una profesora en matemáticas. Soy una guerrera, orgullosa de su cultura e identidad.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

Leesa B Anzaldo | Math | She is one of the best professors at UCSD, striving for student interaction. The math 103 series was intellectually stimulating, and she was always available whenever I had a question. She inspired me to bring out the best of myself.

Dr. Teresa Newman and Mary Negrete | UCSD Extension: Interpretation | They are invaluable professors to me. I couldn’t have improved without their help. They are awesome! I learned how to interact with students of various cultures and countries.

Dr. Rachel Millstone, Dr. Alison Black, Erica Heinzman | EDS Department | These professors have taught me how to examine the social, community, and academic context of education, including the management and instructional practices of teachers. I am so grateful for being a tutor and apprentice, implementing the theories of learning and classroom interaction.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

I will attend UCSD Graduate School within the Department of Education Studies for their Master of Education Degree/Teaching Credential (SS-2) program and their Bilingual Authorization (BLA) Program. Math is language and culture, flowing and never-ending. My goal is to become a mathematics professor who advocates, finds opportunities, and strives for equity for all her students at every stage in the P-20 education continuum. Being a mentor is not strictly teaching, but learning from and being there for our future ambassadors. The education courses that I have taken at UCSD have provided me with so much wealth about student involvement and active learning! Education needs to provide a safe environment for its students. All students are our future doctors, lawyers, surgeons, and anything that they set their minds. They have the potential to revolutionize the world.

Asistiré a la Escuela de Graduados de UCSD dentro del Departamento de Estudios de Educación. Voy a obtener una Maestría en Educación (SS-2), una credencial para enseñar y autorización para enseñar en español (BLA). Las matemáticas es lenguaje y cultura, fluidas e infinitas. Mi meta es ser una profesora de matemáticas que defienda la igualdad equitativa, encuentre oportunidades y luche por la equidad para todos sus estudiantes desde la preprimaria hasta la escuela de graduados. Ser un mentor no es solamente enseñar, sino aprender y estar ahí para nuestros embajadores del futuro. ¡Los cursos de educación que he tomado en UCSD me han brindado mucha riqueza en información acerca de la participación de los estudiantes y el aprendizaje activo! La educación necesita proveer un ambiente seguro para sus estudiantes. Todos los estudiantes son nuestros futuros médicos, abogados, cirujanos y cualquier cosa que se propongan hacer. Tienen la capacidad de transformar el mundo.
