What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
I never thought that college was a possibility for me and I am so glad I was able to prove myself wrong. I am proud of myself for beating the odds and breaking the stereotype of what someone in ""higher education"".
As a first-generation college graduate, I've always carried a sense of responsibility for not only my future, but that of my family. I am glad my siblings will have someone to look up to, and know that college is an option for them. More than that, they will have the resources and support that I didn't have.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
I am incredibly proud of having been able to have been a part of this years Public Health Honors Practicum. We conducted an evaluation of a fall prevention program hosted by Scripps Memorial Hospital that aimed to reduce falls in older adults and provide better outcomes for our elderly population. As our project came to an end, and COVID became an imminent threat, we were tasked to look at the effects of COVID-19 on older adults in San Diego. I am incredibly proud of myself and my group for being able to complete these projects in the midst of an unprecedented and tumultuous quarter.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I wouldn't be here without my family. My parents, who left everything behind and sacrificed everything to give me the opportunity to be here. Mi mamá, who worked hard to put me through college and give my siblings and I everything she could, and supported me as much as she could. She's grown along with me on this journey. Mi papá, even though he isn't here to see me graduate, who always believed that I would be able to accomplish something great. I am thankful to have had my brothers, who are truly my biggest motivation in life. Of course, I would like to thank my extended family as well; they have supported me despite the distance.
My friends, who have always been there for me and supported me though my highest highs and my lowest lows. I am so lucky to have met such an amazing group of people in my life, and I don't know where I would be without you. Thank you for countless laughs and countless memories. I am proud of everything you have all accomplished, and everything you've inspired me to do. It is needless to say that I love you all.
Lastly, I would like to thank the educators who got me to where I am. Ms. Sauvageau, my fourth and fifth-grade teacher, who made me realize my potential. I would be a very different person if I hadn't had your incredible care and nurture at such an influential age. Even years later, your influence has carried on. I would also like to thank my high school counselors and teachers who prepared me for college and always made the classroom a great experience. Thank you for your guidance, your patience, and your dedication.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Dr. Nancy Binkin has made my college education absolutely priceless. She has always been there to encourage her students, and help them grow both professionally and academically. With her guidance, I was able to always strive for more and think more critically. I can't even begin to express how life-changing it has been to work with her. I will always cherish that opportunity.
I would also like to thank the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health. Every single professor I had throughout my undergrad has been beyond incredible. I truly appreciate all knowledge they have provided me. Of course, we can't forget the amazing advisors who work countless hours to ensure the success of students in their departments.
