• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

Being a First-Generation POC College Graduate means being a role model/mentor for those who are often underrepresented in spaces of higher education. I hope that by pursuing and completing higher education, I am able to inspire students of color, so that they can too navigate their way through institutions that we often do not see ourselves being represented in.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

My proudest moment at UCSD was overcoming all of my academic insecurities and challenges, and finally earning all A's during Winter quarter of my second year. Not only that, but it was within that same year that I was able to become and MSTP tutor and also secure a research position. It was my proudest moment because the previous quarter I had truly hit rock bottom in terms of academic success and mental health. However, going through those challenges, pushed me to work even harder and reach both my academic and professional goals. That moment was truly the turning point of my college career.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

My biggest supporters throughout my academic journey has always been my family in El Monte. I want to thank my parents for supporting me throughout my college journey. Their sacrifices and passion for a better life were the glimpse of light I needed through my darkest times at UCSD. My little sister, Giselle, has also been a huge inspiration throughout my college journey. Without knowing it she motivated me to complete my degree because I wanted to show her that anything is possible. And that despite the challenges life throws at us, we're more than capable of achieving our dreams. I also want to thank all my family that has contributed to my academic journey, whether through words of encouragement or a ride to and from school, I appreciate every small gesture y'all have done for me. Lastly I want to thank my Upward Bound family, especially Laura and Ernesto, who were the biggest supporters throughout my academic journey. Thank you for listening to me, embracing me, and being a part of the journey with me. I am forever indebted to you guys. I hope I make all of you proud.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

The friends I have made at UCSD have been some of the most influential and supportive individuals I have encountered throughout my college journey. If it wasn't for their constant support and words of encouragement I don't think I would be where I am today. I also want to thank Dr. Weizman for being one of the most caring faculty members I have encountered here at UCSD. I will never forget when I first went to his office hours he looked at me and said, "You look so nervous, relax. You got this.", and those words stuck with me ever since. Dr. Weizman also offered very encouraging advice over Dinner With a Prof, and ever since then he has become my all time favorite professor. Furthermore, I especially want to thank my lab mentor, Araceli Perez-Lopez, for going above and beyond for me. Not only was she supportive in my academic endeavors, but was also there for me throughout my most joyous moments, to moments of heart break, and anything in between. Gracias por hacer soportar todas mis locuras! Te aprecio mucho Araceli. Espero hacerte orgullosa un dia.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

After graduation, I will be continuing my education here at UCSD through the B.S./M.S. program. After that, I hope to gain some hands on experience as a medical assistant before applying to either Nursing or PA school.

• ¿Qué significa para ti obtener tu título universitario como graduado de primera generación?

Ser una Persona de Color de Primera Generación Graduada de la Universidad significa ser un modelo a seguir/un mentor para aquellos que normalmente están subrepresentados en espacios de Educación Superior. Espero que por iniciar y completar un grado de Educación Superior, yo pueda inspirar a otros estudiantes de color, para que también ellos puedan navegar su camino a traves de instituciones en las que normalmente no nos vemos representados.

• ¿Cual es el momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UCSD?

El momento de mayor orgullo en UCSD fue superar todas mis inseguridades académicas y retos, y finalmente obtener todas las A's durante el trimestre de iniverno de mi segundo año. No sólo eso, pero en ese mismo año que pude convertirme en tutor MSTP y también asegurar una posición de investigación. Fue el momento de mayor orgullo porque el trimestre anterior realmente había tocado fondo en términos de éxito académico y salud mental. Sin embargo, pasar por esos momentos me motivó a trabajar todavía más para lograr mis metas académicas y profesionales. Ese momento fue realmente el punto de inflexión en mi carrera universitaria.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de tu familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Mi gran apoyo a lo largo de mi carrera siempre ha sido mi familia en El Monte. Quiero agradecer a mis padres por apoyarme a lo largo de mis años universitarios. Sus sacrificios y pasión por una mejor vida fueron el rayo de luz que necesitaba en mis momentos más dificiles en UCSD. Mi pequeña hermana, Giselle, también ha sido una gran inspiración a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria. Sin saberlo, ella me motivó a completar mi carrera porque yo quería enseñarle que todo es posible. Y que a pesar de los retos que nos pone la vida, somos capaces de alcanzar nuestros sueños. También quiero agradecer a toda mi familia que ha contribuido a lo largo de mi carrera, ya sea con palabras de aliento o llevándome o recogiéndome de la escuela, aprecio cada gesto que han tenido conmigo. Por último, quiero agradecer a mi familia Upward Bound, especialmente a Laura y Ernesto, quienes fueron el apoyo más grande a través de mi carrera. Gracias por escucharme, aceptarme, y caminar conmigo en este viaje. Siempre estaré en deuda con ustedes. Espero hacerlos sentir orgullosos.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la comunidad de UCSD (profesores, educadores, mentores) que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Los amigos que he hecho en UCSD han sido algunas de las personas más influyentes y comprensivas que he encontrado a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria. Si no fuera por su constante apoyo y palabras de aliento, no creo que estaría donde me encuentro hoy. También quiero agradecer al Dr. Weizman por ser uno de los Profesores más atentos que he conocido aquí en UCSD. Nunca olvidaré cuando fui por primera vez a sus horas de oficina, me vió y me dijo, "Te ves muy nervioso, relájate. ¡Tu puedes!", y esas palabras se me quedaron grabadas desde entonces. Dr. Weizman también me ofreció consejos muy alentadores en relación al programa "Dinner With a Prof", y desde entonces él se convirtió en mi profesor favorito. Además quiero agradecer de manera especial a mi mentor de laboratorio, Araceli Perez-Lopez, por el trabajo excepcional que hizo apoyándome. No únicamente me apoyó en mis esfuerzos académicos, pero también estuvo allí para mí en mis momentos más alegres, en los momentos en que tenía el corazón roto, y cualquier otra cosa. Gracias por soportar todas mis locuras! Te aprecio mucho Araceli. Espero hacerte sentir orgullosa un día.

• ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Después de graduarme, continuaré mi educación aquí en UCSD a través del programa B.S./M.S. Después de eso, espero tener experiencia práctica como asistente médico, antes de postularme para a la escuela de Enfermería o PA.
