What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
It means being a good example for other disenfranchised youth and people who have hopes and aspirations but may be hesitant to take the next step toward achieving their dreams. I hope to instill hope and motivation and demonstrate that despite the barriers we may have to cross we are all capable of so much and if we are willing to work hard and push ourselves that our hard work will pay off.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
Graduating will be my proudest moment. It took a lot of courage and hard work to get where I am and I have been fortunate to find support here on campus and from my family to stay focused and motivated even when things seemed tough.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I would like to thank my husband who has worked tirelessly to support out family. Without his hard work and encouragement I don't know how any of this would be possible for me. I would like to thank my two boys for motivating me to do better and work hard to help give them a brighter, more stable future than I had growing up.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Yes, the staff at Trio SSSP have been very helpful and supportive and helped make my transition to the university much more smoother than had I not participated in the summer experience program. The friends and stories I heard there helped me feel like there was a group where I belonged, that there were other people with backgrounds and stories somewhat similar to mine. Knowing that we are in this together and that we all have come this far taught me that we are capable and worthy of an education. At times it may seem dim and I must admit that I did feel impostor syndrome but having access to other people who were also struggling but persisting helped keep me inspired and in awe of our individual gifts and the importance of community.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
I am attending the Ph.D program of English literature with a concentration in cultural studies at Cornell University.
