• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

Being a First-Generation College Graduate means being the first in my family to accomplish something so big as getting a bachelors degree in a science major. Being the first to get a job that is not minimum wage and being able to help my family at home for everything that they have sacrificed, for me to be able to attend UCSD and nonetheless graduate from UCSD.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

My proudest moment from my time at UCSD was not giving up every time that I got frustrated and thought I would not make it through the quarter. The feeling I would get after turning in a final or lab report knowing that I did the best I could and got an A.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

The most influential people throughout my college journey have been my family and boyfriend they were always there for me to vent when I had rough days and to share good news with as well. They always tried to support me in any way that they could. I want them to know that without them getting through to graduation would have not been possible and that I am so thankful that I had such a great support system because without it I do not think I would have accomplished this. I also want them to know that this accomplishment is not only mine but ours because I share it with them: with my family and boyfriend. I did it for me, for us, every undocumented person who did not have the same opportunities as I did. Especially I want to tell my parents that I graduated to make their sacrifice of coming to another country with nothing but with what they could carry, count for something to show them that it was not in vain and I will never forget that they gave me everything they could without speaking English, without a degree, but with a lot of perseverance and determination. They have taught me so much and this is just the beginning of what I am capable of.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

The people at UCSD that have been most influential throughout my college journey have been my physics and metabolic professors, they saw the potential I had and believed in me when I did not completely believe in myself. I would like to tell them: "Thank you so much for believing in me and offering the courage and support I needed in UCSD when there were times I left alone. I knew I could always count on them from advice, to letters of recommendation, and help with homework."

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

After graduation, I plan to get a job in a research lab meanwhile I apply to medical school and I hope to become a cardiovascular surgeon.

• ¿Qué significa para ti obtener tu título universitario como graduado de primera generación?

Ser parte de la primera generación de estudiantes universitarios graduados significa ser la primera en mi familia en lograr algo tan grande como obtener una licenciatura en ciencias, ser la primera en obtener un trabajo que no sea de salario mínimo, y poder ayudar a mi familia en casa por todo lo que han sacrificado para que yo pueda asistir a UCSD y, aún más, graduarme de UCSD.

• ¿Cual es el momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UCSD?

Mi momento de mayor orgullo en mi tiempo en UCSD fue no rendirme cada vez que me frustraba y pensaba que no podría pasar el trimestre. La sensación que tendría después de entregar un informe final o de laboratorio sabiendo que hice lo mejor que pude y obtuve una A.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de tu familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Las personas más influyentes a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria han sido mi familia y mi novio, que siempre estuvieron allí para poder desahogarme cuando tuve días difíciles y también para compartir buenas noticias. Siempre intentaron apoyarme de cualquier manera que pudieran. Quiero que sepan que sin ellos no hubiera sido posible graduarme y que estoy muy agradecida de haber tenido un sistema de apoyo tan bueno porque sin él no creo que hubiera logrado esto. También quiero que sepan que este logro no es solo mío sino nuestro porque lo comparto con ellos: con mi familia y mi novio. Lo hice por mí, por nosotros, por todas las personas indocumentadas que no tuvieron las mismas oportunidades que yo. Especialmente quiero decirles a mis padres que me gradué para hacer que su sacrificio de venir a otro país con nada más que con lo que llevaban puesto valiera la pena, para mostrarles que no fue en vano y que nunca olvidaré que me dieron todo lo que pudieron sin hablar inglés, sin título, pero con mucha perseverancia y determinación. Me han enseñado mucho y esto es sólo el comienzo de lo que soy capaz de hacer.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la comunidad de UCSD (profesores, educadores, mentores) que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Las personas en UCSD que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria han sido mis profesores de física y metabolismo, ellos vieron el potencial que tenía y creyeron en mí cuando yo no creía completamente en mí misma. A ellos me gustaría decirles: "Muchas gracias por creer en mí y ofrecer el coraje y el apoyo que necesitaba en UCSD cuando hubo veces que me quede sola. Siempre supe que podía contar con ellos desde consejos hasta cartas de recomendación, y ayuda con las tareas".

• ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Después de graduarme, planeo conseguir un trabajo en un laboratorio de investigación mientras aplico a la escuela de medicina. Espero convertirme en una cirujana cardiovascular.
