Vanessa De Haro

• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?

Being a First-Generation College Graduate comes with great pride. For me, it symbolizes an achievement that comes from the efforts of myself but most importantly, my family. It highlights the sacrifices my parents made coming into a foreign country to find our family a better life and it extends into the struggles we faced leading up to this moment. Nearing graduation, this new identity as a graduate fills me with feelings of empowerment. It will always stand as a reminder in my life of the love and support my parents have given me.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?

A large amount of my college career was dedicating to working for Triton Community Leadership Institute, a program that helps first-generation first-year students transition into college. As a mentee, I received so much support from the program as I transitioned into UCSD my first-year. From this experience, I wanted to give back to that community and ensure that everyone in the program who were to come would not face any of the challenges I did. I became a mentor coordinator my third year in which I spear headed a 4-day summer institute and created monthly events throughout the year to provide students with resources and a community. My proudest moment came during our end of the year banquet as student were giving testimonials on their experience. Students were recounting how this program gave them a community to lean on when times were difficult throughout their first year. It was in that moment that I knew I had accomplished my goal. I, along with the rest of the TCLI staff, had impacted the lives of these students. Seeing them prosper within our community due to the support we gave them was the proudest moment I had at UCSD.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

My mom, dad, and brother have constantly been my motivation for everything I do. Mi familia, thank you for being my number one supporters. Your spontaneous visits to La Jolla when I was struggling either with my mental or physical health are so dear to me. Mama, thank you for listening to me about my struggles and rushing to my side when I needed you. You and Papa always made sure I always had everything I needed. Papa, thank you for the many times you drove down to take me to the doctor's or bring me something from home. Seeing you drive down from work late at night reminded of my I was here. Mama y Papa, thank you for your sacrifices and love. You both sacrificed so much coming to this country for Mark and I. You both work endless hours for us to live comfortably. Everything I do is for you. You both are my strength, love, and motivation. Mark, my little brother, I only wish to guide you to the highest goals you wish to achieve. You empower me and show me what true strength is. Thank you for always being so supportive and loving. I love you all so much!

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?

Frida Alvear has been the most influential UCSD staff throug out my college journey. Frida, thank you for guiding my growth during my time in TCLI and beyond. You aided me in my growth as a leader and helped me reach new heights that I did not know existed. During my time working with you, I gained confidence in myself and truly became rooted in my identity as a first-generation college student and a Latina. Your passion for social justice ignited my own. I am inspired to make changes in the lives of others who will come after me so they don't face the struggles I did. Thank you for empowering me and guiding me to find my own voice as it was something I struggled to find before. Your support and encouragement allowed me to believe in myself and trust my abilities. Thank you for a wonderful 3 years of growth along your side. I truly admire you and work you do to create change in our community.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?

My plan is to go to medical school Fall of 2022! It has been my life-long dream to become a pediatrician and serve my community back at home.

• ¿Qué significa para ti obtener tu título universitario como graduado de primera generación?

Ser una Graduada Universitaria de Primera Generación es un gran orgullo. Para mi, simboliza un logro que viene de mis esfuerzos, pero sobre todo, de mi familia. Refleja los sacrificios que mis padres hicieron al venir a un pais desconocido para encontrar una vida mejor para nuestra familia y se extiende a los problemas que hemos enfrentado hasta este momento. A poco tiempo de la graduación, esta nueva identidad como graduada me llena de sentimientos de empoderamiento. Siempre será un recuerdo en mi vida del amor y apoyo que me han dado mis padres.

• ¿Cual es el momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UCSD?

Gran parte de mi carrera universitaria me dediqué a trabajar para el Triton Community Leadership Institute, un programa que ayuda a los estudiantes de primer año de primera generación en su transición a la Universidad. Como aprendiz, recibí mucho apoyo del programa cuando me encontraba en la transición a UCSD durante mi primer año. Despúes de esta experiencia, quería retribuir a la comunidad y asegurarme que todos los que eran parte del programa, no enfrentaran ninguno de los retos que yo viví. Me convertí en coordinadora de mentores en mi tercer año, tiempo en el que dirigí un instituto de verano de 4 días, y establecí eventos mensuales durante todo el año para ofrecer recursos a los estudiantes, al igual que una comunidad. El momento de mayor orgullo fue durante nuestro banquete de fin de año, cuando los estudiantes estaban compartiendo testimonios sobre su experiencia. Los estudiantes relataron como este programa les dió una comunidad en la cual apoyarse durante los tiempos difíciles durante su primer año. Fue en ese momento que supe que había logrado mi objetivo. Yo, acompañada del resto del staff de TCLI, había impactado en la vida de esos estudiantes. Verlos prosperar dentro de nuestra comunidad debido al apoyo que les dimos, fue el momento de más orgullo que tuve en UCSD.

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de tu familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Mi madre, mi padre, y mi hermano han sido constantemente mi motivación en todo lo que hago. Mi familia, gracias por ser mi apoyo número uno. Sus espontaneas visitas a La Jolla cuando estaba sufriendo, ya sea por mi salud mental o física, son recuerdos muy queridos para mí. Mamá, gracias por escuchar mis problemas y correr a mi lado cuando te necesitaba. Tú y mi papá siempre se aseguraron de que siempre tuviera todo lo que necesitaba. Papá, gracias por todas las veces que manejaste para llevarme al doctor o traerme algo de casa. Verte manejar por las noches después de trabajar, me hacía recordar porque estaba aquí. Mamá y Papá, gracias por sus sacrificios y amor. Ustedes dos sacrificaron mucho cuando vinieron a este país, para darnos una mejor vida a Mark y a mi. Ustedes trabajan horas interminables para que nosotros tengamos una vida cómoda. Todo lo que hago es por ustedes. Ustedes son mi fortaleza, amor y motivación. Mark, mi pequeño hermano, solo espero poder guiarte a lograr esas metas tan grandes que tienes. Tú me empoderas y me enseñas lo que es la fortaleza. Gracias por siempre apoyarme y quererme. Los amo!

• ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la comunidad de UCSD (profesores, educadores, mentores) que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de tu carrera universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que deseas compartir con ellos?

Frida Alvear ha sido la persona más influyente en UCSD a lo largo de mi carrera. Frida, gracias por guiarme en mi crecimiento durante y después de mis años en TCLI. Tú me ayudaste en mi crecimiento como líder y me ayudaste a alcanzar nuevos niveles que no sabía que existían. Durante el tiempo que trabajé contigo, gané confianza en mí misma y realmente experimenté mi identidad como estudiante universitaria de primera generación y como Latina. Tu pasión por la justicia social, me ayudo a encontrarla también en mi. Estoy inspirada en hacer cambios en la vida de otros que vendrán después de mí, para que ellos no enfrenten los mismos retos que yo enfrenté. Gracias por empoderarme y guiarme a encontrar mi propia voz, ya que antes era algo que luchaba por encontrar. Tu apoyo y aliento me permitieron creer en mí y confiar en mis habilidades. Gracias por los tres maravillosos años de crecimiento a tu lado. Realmente te admiro y admiro el trabajo que haces para hacer un cambio en nuestra comunidad.

• ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Mi plan es ir a la Escuela de Medicina en Otoño 2022! Ha sido mi sueño desde siempre convertirme en pediatra y servir a mi comunidad en mi ciudad natal.
