What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
It means everything to me. My parents worked extremely hard, with my mom working multiple jobs to put me through school. They sacrificed so much of their lives to give me opportunities they never got when they were my age. To see how proud they are lets me know that I did what they wanted me to do. I immersed myself into college with no background on what it would be like, and I graduated in less time than I was expected. I’m extremely proud to be the first in my family to be a college graduate.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
Being part of a paper that was published for the work our lab did in Immunology.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I would say my parents would be the most influential. They have always been my biggest cheerleaders and have always told me to follow my dreams. They have always shown me what it means to work hard and have raised me to do the same. I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today without that. I would also say that my best friend, Luay, has been influential as well. He’s the hardest working person I’ve ever met, and he’s shown me what it means to be both a good person and a capable one. I’m very lucky to know him.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I would say particularly Dr. Armour and Dr. Yelon, two professors at UCSD would be the most influential. They are extremely passionate about what they teach and they truly care for each of their students’ success. They are always easy to approach and made learning interesting, which is hard to do with the subjects they teach. I appreciate their work in making our class interesting and fun.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
I would like to get my Bachelor’s in Nursing Science to become an RN. I would eventually like to be a Nurse Practitioner.
