What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
Being First-Gen is certainly a huge accomplishment, not only for myself but for my family and community. It is an opportunity and privilege that many people do not get to undergo. Additionally, one that my parents have sacrificed so much of their lives to allow me to be out here and be able to educate myself further than they were able too.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
My proudest moment is definitely being able to transfer here. After taking a few years off from high school and having to start from square one at my community college, it's highly rewarding to see my hard work is paying off.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Everyone from friends to the occasional person I've had small conversations with have in some way, influenced my life. And I'm thankful for the words of encouragement big or small that I've received throughout my time here.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Honestly, the only reason I have been so sane here is thanks to all of my friends I've met along the way, whether in classes, work, or my lab. We've all kept each other in check and are continuously inspiring and motivating each other to keep reaching our goals. I also want to shout out a lot of the Cog Sci professors because they've always been super supportive and nurturing to their students.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
At the moment, I'm considering taking a gap year to continue working at the lab I'm in or look for another job for a bit. I do plan on applying to graduate programs in England for fall of 2021.
