Coach Terry Cain
In 1991, Coach Terry Cain began her track coaching career that would span a total of thirty-five consecutive years until her retirement in the spring of 2025. She brought with her a vast knowledge of distance training methods from her years as a member of the U.S. Junior National Cross-Country Ski Team as well as her success as an All-State track athlete during her high school track career at Pinedale High School. For all these thirty-five years, Coach Cain was involved with coaching the distant runners for the Puncher teams.
Forty-two times Coach Cain’s individual distance runners (800m – 3200m) met all-state standards by placing in the top two in their events as the Wyoming State Track meet. In addition, her 3200m relay team brought home gold medals on six different occasions. Perhaps the highlight of Coach Cain’s career came when her talented girls in 2024 Wy. State meet finished in first, second, third and fourth positions in the 1600m run.
The success of Coach Cain’s runners at the Wyoming State Meet as well as the success of the many talented runners in the other events at the state meet helped lead the Big Piney teams to twenty-seven top three finishes at the Wy. State meet including seven state runner-up finishes and seven Wyoming Class 2A State Championships.
The thirty-five years as a coach at Big Piney High School is the longest of any tenure for the many coaches who have worn the Puncher’s Red & White with pride. Coach Cain’s longevity has not been overlooked as she has twice been named the Wyoming Coaches Association Assistant Track Coach of the Year. Even more impressive is her being named by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as a finalist for its National Assistant Coach of the Year Award based on her longevity and success as a high school coach.
