As a graduate of 1978, Mike Fenn ended an outstanding career at Big Piney High School by being named Big Piney's All-Around Athlete of the Year. As an underclassman in the previous year, he was awarded the prestigious Robbie Douglas Award for the most promising underclassman. Living up the that award, Mike was one of many key players in the Puncher's State Championship football title in 1977. Mike added Class B All-State honors to go along with his SW All-Conference selection as well as being named as the state's Player of the Week during the season. At season's end, Mike was selected as the team's Outstanding Player. As a successful track athlete, Mike earned All-State honors with a school record performance in the shot put while at the state meet. He also set school records in the discus and the triple jump. Mike was later named as Big Piney's Outstanding Track Athlete. Mike continued his football playing days while attending the Air Force Academy for two years before transferring to the University of Wyoming where he finished his education. Not one to shy away from competition, Mike pursued an interest in body building and was later named Mr. Wyoming in body building competition. Although athletics was an important part of his high school days, Mike also concentrated on his education and was the salutatorian of the Senior Class of 1978.
