Graduating from Big Piney High School in 1968, Charlie Simonton ended his outstanding career as a Puncher athlete. Over his four years, Charlie earned All-Conference and All-State honors in football, basketball, and track. As a football player, Charlie was All-Conference all four years and was named to the All-State team in both his junior and senior years. During his four-year stint, Simonton scored 103 touchdowns including a fantastic 48 during his senior year. In that 1967 season, he averaged 240 yards per game. In one game during his senior year, Charlie scored nine touchdowns by rushing, receiving, punt return, kick return as well as one on a fumble recovery and one on an interception. As a basketball player, Charlie Simonton was named to the All-Conference team and the All-State team in both his junior and senior years. As the team captain in those years, Charlie averaged an impressive seventeen points per game. As a trackster, Charlie was a standout in the sprints and still holds the Puncher school record for the 100m dash. He was twice awarded All-State and was a member of the 880- yard relay team that set a state record. As an athlete for Big Piney, Charlie Simonton was also the first recipient of the Robbie Douglas Award given in memory of another great Puncher athlete.
