Prelude: A 15 to 14 win over Mt. View in one of the last games of the year secured a Conference Championship and a spot in the Wyoming State Play-Offs for the very young Puncher team despite a less than impressive 5-3 record. The match up brought the #1 ranked Greybull Buffaloes and their Player of the Year and Wyoming recruit quarterback to Big Piney for the game. Although both teams moved the ball well early in the game, neither could muster any scoring. Big Piney had moved the ball within the five yard line on two previous occasions but failed to score a touchdown. Late in the second quarter, the Punchers again found themselves inside the five yard line, but a holding penalty brought the ball to the eighteen yard line. The Play: After a third down play that gained nothing, I saw Eric Sawyer, our senior quarterback, run to the sideline and grab the kicking tee. I remember trying to figure out how far the kick (35 yd.) would be and where I was going to have to kick it from on the field. Then I thought, no way, it must be a fake as there is no way he is going let me kick this. Sawyer got back in the huddle and called the play -- field goal. I remember Eric having a look of shock or despair, maybe disbelief as well. It was pretty damn quiet in the huddle for sure. Fellow sophomore Andy Krieger was the deep snapper so no problem there. I was trying to explain to Eric not to hold the ball too far back or I would hook it. He looked at me and said, "Just make it." The snap was good, hold good, and kick was away. A little hook, but from the right hash mark no problem. The three points were enough for the win that day as our defense scored a shutout. The 3-0 win got the Punchers into the State finals. One of the funest games I played. Although if coach would have called 33 power on the five yard line I would have scored -- (tongue in cheek).
