Nick Smith began his track career by qualifying but not placing in three events at
the Wyoming State Track Meet as a freshman. From that point forward, Smith
not only qualified but placed in every event he was entered at the state meet.
Nick was an important part of three straight state championship track teams for
the Big Piney Punchers.
As a sophomore, Smith earned his first of three all state awards as a member of
the first-place 3200m relay team. He followed that with a third-place finish in the
800, a fifth-place finish in the 3200m, and a seventh-place finish in the 1600m
run.
Nick’s junior year found him attaining individual All-State honors with a second-
place finish in the 1600m run. He, along with his teammates, again won gold in
the 3200m relay. He finished that meet with a third-place finish in the 800m run
to go with an eighth finish in the high jump.
As a senior, Smith won the 800m run to go along with his third straight gold in the
3200m relay. He placed third in the 1600m run and anchored the 1600m relay to
a fourth-place finish. It was also in his senior year that Nick Smith joined with
Jackson Hole High School as a member of their Cross-Country team. Nick earned
All-State honors by finishing fifth at the state meet and helped in leading Jackson
Hole High to a 3A Wyoming State championship.
Nick Smith ended his track career at the University of Wyoming where he ran for
two seasons for the Brown & Gold in Laramie.
