Mike Thorsby was a three sport athlete graduating from Big Piney in 1972. As a football player in 1972, Mike was named to the All-Conference team and was selected Honorable Mention All-State. For his basketball abilities, he was again selected to the All-Conference team and was selected to the Class B All District Tournament team and finally gained All-State recognition at season's end. As impressive as these selections were, Mike's accomplishments in track and field are even more noteworthy. As a junior, Mike won four events at the District track meet and led his team to a fourth place finish at the state meet. His first place finishes in high jump and 120yd hurdles highlighted the year but high finishes as well in the 100yd dash, 180yd low hurdles, and 220yd dash helped enable the Punchers to the fourth place finish. At the conclusion of his junior year, Mike was invited to and participated in three events at the Wyoming Meet of Champions. During his senior year, Mike's accomplishments were even more outstanding as he won six events at the district track meet. At the state meet, he was a four event champion by winning both hurdle races as well as 100yd dash and the high jump. His high jump and high hurdle times established new state records. Mike scored nearly all of the points as the Punchers rose to a runner-up finish in Class B at the Wyoming State Track Meet. At the conclusion of the season, this athlete participated in four events at the Meet of Champions. By the end of his career, Mike had set four district records and six Big Piney records some of which still stands for the Punchers today.
