Cheryl Long
1998-2008
Coach Long began her tenure as a swim coach for Sublette County #9 as the Middle School Assistant Coach in both girls and boys swimming. After a two-year stint in those positions, Coach Long added Assistant High School Girls Swim Coach to her resume. The following year, 2002, Cheryl accepted the position as Head High School Boys Swim Coach. Coach Long also added the position of assistant high school girls swim coach at that time.
In 2003-2004, Coach Long became the head coach for both girls and boys at Big Piney High School. She held those positions until her retirement from teaching in 2008.
Complicating her position as head coach was the fact that Big Piney and Pinedale had
established a needed Combination School agreement that enabled both Big Piney and Pinedale to swim as one team, Sublette County. Despite complications, Coach Long persisted and the combination school agreement went relatively smooth.
During her time, Coach Long’s undermanned teams managed to stay competitive in the 3A classification level. In 2007, the Sublette County finished third at the Wyoming State Meet. The following year, the team brough home the Runner-Up trophy at the 2008 Wyoming State Swim Meet. It was the highest finish for a Big Piney and/or Pinedale team since Big Piney’s 1984 Runner-Up finish.
Individual honors were also forthcoming for Coach Long. In 2003, Coach Long earned her Coach of the Year ring as the Wyoming Coaches Association selected her as their Assistant Coach of the Year. During the 2006 and the 2007 seasons, the coaches of the 3A West Conference selected her as their Conference Coach of the Year. Coach Long topped that honor by being named the Boys Swimming Coach of the Year by the Wyoming Swim Coaches Association.
