In 1982, Ron Chapin graduated from Big Piney High School after a remarkable career as a Puncher. Ron, along with his younger brother Rod, were the first Big Piney athletes to letter in four sports during a school year. As an excellent all around athlete, Ron earned All-Conference honors in football in both his junior and senior years as well as All-Conference in basketball his senior year. Perhaps his swimming honors are most impressive as he was an individual state champion on four separate occasions including setting a state record in the 500 Free in 1980 only to break it again in 1981. He was also a member of four state champion relay teams including the 4X400 meter Free Relay which set a state record that still stands today. Ron was a three year All-State performer in swimming and was a member of the 1980 Wyoming State Champions. Basketball and football were no less impressive for Ron. In addition to his All-Conference honors, Ron was selected to the All-State basketball team and was a member of the 1982 state runner-up team. As a football player, Ron was selected to the second team All-State and also was selected to represent Big Piney as a member of the South team in the 1982 Shrine Bowl. As a senior trackster, Ron was the conference champion in the 800m run and was also a member of the winning 4x200m relay team that helped Big Piney win the 2A Southwest Conference Championship. Upon graduating from Big Piney, Ron continued his swimming career as a letter winner for the University of Wyoming's swim team. Keeping with “Tradition Never Rests”, Ron has continued his success as both the girl's and boy's swim coach for nineteen years at Buffalo High School where his Bison teams have been very successful with four runner-up finishes at the state meet and Ron has earned East Conference Swim Coach of the Year honors eight times.
