In 1971, Coach Glenn Thomas began his coaching career at Sublette County District 9. Starting at the middle school level, Glenn quickly established a powerhouse with four undefeated seasons while accumulating a record of twenty-five wins, one loss and a tie. He also coached an undefeated seventh grade basketball team in his one year of basketball coaching.
In 1976, Coach Thomas moved into the head high school position and continued his winning ways. For the next seven years, Coach Thomas’ Puncher teams proved to be very strong. His Punchers won or shared conference championships 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981. His 1977 team was the undefeated Wyoming State Champions. He followed that with a runner-up finish in 1979. During his tenure, Coach Thomas was named Southwest Conference Coach of the year twice and in 1978 was the Wyoming Coaches Association’s Class B Coach of the Year. In addition, he found himself coaching in the Shrine Bowl on two separate occasions.
Coach Thomas also received numerous honors outside the field of athletics. In 1988, Glenn Thomas was selected as the Outstanding Biology Teacher by the National Association of Biology Teachers. In 1992, he received the Presidential Award of Excellence in Science and Mathematics teaching. Lastly, Mr. Thomas served two years on the Wyoming Educational Advisory Board for restructuring math and science curriculum for the state.
Locally, Glenn served on the Marbleton Town Council for eleven years. He also served a two year term on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and four times was an invited guest of the Governor of Wyoming to his Governor’s Prayer Breakfast. Glenn also served on a University of Wyoming board for reorganizing national 4-H projects.
Despite coaching and teaching positions being offered to Coach Thomas, he chose to remain at Big Piney High School until his retirement from teaching in 2006.
