Prior to his graduation from Big Piney High School, John Linn took advantage of all the offerings in the Big Piney School District. From winning numerous spelling bees, to earning awards in the WY State Science Fairs, to his starting positions on the Puncher football teams, and even as a saddle bronc rider for the BPHS rodeo team, Linn found excellence in all his endeavors.
After graduating in 1974, John enrolled and attended Denver Automotive and Diesel College for two years. That education would prove beneficial as he was able to maintain his own equipment as co-owner of Dash Roustabout Service. With the decimation of the oilfield in 1982, John was forced to start his own business and renamed the service to Linnco Corporation where he diligently worked to reestablish the business. Continuing to explore other business opportunities, John and wife, Kim, developed Fencetrak, a fence contracting company which would run alongside the Linnco Co. They operated Fencetrak until 2010 when they sold the company to son, Adam.
John’s outdoor enthusiasm has led to numerous amazing accomplishments. In 1984 a horrific water accident led John and his scuba diver friends, Dan Holgate and Scott Mackie to form an organized dive team. John has led this team for more than forty years as a part of the Sublette County Search and Rescue team. Currently, John serves on the Wy State SAR Counsel as appointed by the Governor. After many years of learning to snowboard with his son, Seth, John decided that he would like to become a snowboard instructor. After rigorous work and effort, John became a Level Two Instructor and would eventually teach snowboarding at Western Wyoming Community College.
John Linn has also been politically active in Sublette County. In 1994, John served on the Rural Health Care District during a very volatile time. In 2005, John was elected as a Sublette County Commissioner and served in that position for two terms. During that time, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative helping protect Sublette County land from government overreach. During his terms as a commissioner the county built both Sublette Senior Centers, the Marbleton Clinic, two ambulance barns and the fairground complex.
Locally John has donated time to the Chuckwagon Days for more than forty years. He is an active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His dedication, devotion and determination are the attributes that make John Linn a distinguished individual.
