Participating in football, basketball, and track, Don Pope excelled as a Big Piney athlete. As a senior Co-Captain for the football team, Don earned All-State honors for his abilities on the field. He was named to the All-Conference Football team as both a junior and a senior. A highlight in his senior year was scoring 56 points against Mt.View. Upon the conclusion of his senior year, the University of Wyoming offered this Puncher a scholarship to play for the Cowboys. Football was not the only sport for this 1956 graduate. Don also played basketball for four years and ran track for two years in that program's early years. In addition, Don Pope was selected the Homecoming King his senior year. Don's work for Big Piney High School did not end upon his graduation. He worked as a swim official for the Big Piney swim teams for six years. He also instructed first aid and CPR classes to Big Piney teachers and coaches for certification purposes. He continued this instruction as an EMT for 43 years.
