Karl Porter
Graduating in 1995, Karl Porter left his mark as an outstanding athlete for Big
Piney High School. Perhaps most significantly as a swimmer but his football
talents and accomplishments should not be overlooked.
Porter received All-State honors as a swimmer on two separate occasions, one
each in his junior and senior seasons. Success at the Wyoming State Swim Meet
started early, as only a sophomore Karl finished with a third-place individual
medal in the Backstroke. He took home two more medals that season as a
member of the 100 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay.
As a junior, Karl Porter won gold in the 100-yard Backstroke at the Wyoming State
Meet. He added an individual medal with a fourth-place finish in the 50-yd. Free.
Porter later teamed with others to a sixth -place finish in the 200 Medley Relay.
His time in the Backstroke set a new school record which still stands as we speak.
A second-place finish in his specialty, the 100 Backstroke, senior Karl earned his
second individual All-State honor. He followed that with a six-place finish in the
50 Free and teamed with three other Sublette County swimmers to a runner-up
finish in the 200 Medley Relay as his swimming career came to an end.
In football, Karl Porter was a three-year starter for the Puncher teams and helped
lead them to three state play-off berths. After a successful senior season, Karl
was selected to the Rocky Mountain All-Conference first team. Later in the spring
of 1995, Karl was invited to and participated for the South team in the Wyoming
State Shrine Bowl.
