As a three sport standout, Brian Costello distinguished himself not only in athletics but also as a scholar during his career as both a high school and college student. Not only was he the salutatorian as a senior in Big Piney, he graduated Suma Cum Laude from Rocky Mountain College. In addition, he was awarded the President's Award for Student Athlete of the Year at the Billings, Montana school. At Eastern Wyoming Community College, Brian earned All-American Academic honors while playing basketball at the junior college level. Combining his athletic abilities with that of his scholastic and leadership qualities, Brian was selected as a finalist for the Milward Simpson Award, an yearly honor bestowed to the finest senior student/athlete in Wyoming. As a football player, Brian was a Class 2A All-State selection during both junior and senior seasons. As a sophomore he was instrumental in helping a talented group of athletes win the 1988 state championship. As a senior he guided the Punchers to a conference championship and to the state semi-finals in the play-offs. At season's end, he was named the Southwest Conference Player of the Year. Brian ended his football days as a member of the South team in the 1991 Shrine Bowl. In basketball, Brian was again selected to the Class 2A All-State team in his junior and senior years leading the Punchers to a state tournament appearance. As a result of his play, Brian was again selected as the Southwest Player of the Year for the sport. His track accomplishments mirror that of both football and basketball as he earned All-State honors again for two seasons while helping a talented track team to two state runner-up finishes. Individually he stood atop the awards stand as the 300m hurdle champion as well as a member of the 4X400 relay team. He also added a second place finish in the 100m hurdles. Brian continued his basketball playing career with stints at Eastern Wyoming Community College and later at Rocky Mountain College earning two letters at each institution. At RMC, he earned Frontier All Conference honors as a point guard and led the conference in steals and assists. Brian went on to be a successful basketball coach in both Montana and Wyoming. He was named three times as the 4A North Girls Coach of the Year while at Natrona High School where he guided the team to a number of runner-up finishes at state tournament. Coach Costello was also selected to coach in two Wyoming Coaches Association All-Star games.
