Gaila Griggs-Gray was a four-sport athlete graduating in 1976 after an outstanding career as a Lady Puncher. She was a four-year member of the Girls' Athletic Association of Big Piney and was its President in 1976 and named Athlete of the Year for her performances in 1975-76. As a freshman in 1973, Gaila placed fifth in the high jump at the Wyoming State Track Meet to garner Big Piney's only points. As a junior, she helped the Puncher volleyball team to a third place finish at the State Volleyball Tournament. It is, however, her swimming accomplishments that make her a standout as an athlete for Big Piney High School. During the final three years of competition, Gaila stood atop the awards stand at the Wyoming State Swim Meet a total of five times. As a junior and senior, she was the 200IM champion as well as the 100 backstroke champion. Her other gold came as a member of the 400 Medley Relay. As a sophomore, Gaila added to her medal count by placing second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200IM. During these three years, the Lady Puncher swimmers earned two state runner-up finishes as well as a fourth place finish. After graduation, Gaila chose to walk on to the University of Utah volleyball team. Later she transferred to Western Wyoming Community College where she played both basketball and volleyball for two years.
