Being named Mr. BPHS in 1986 was just a topping for an outstanding year and career for Joe Olson. As a three sport athlete, Joe excelled and accomplished many feats both as an athlete and a student in his years as a Puncher. As a football player, Joe helped his team to the SW Wyoming Conference Championship and a state play-off bid. As the team's leading rusher with over 1300 yards for the season, Joe was selected to the SW Conference All-Conference team as was selected as its Player of the Year. He was selected, along with a number of his teammates, to Wyoming All-State 2A team. At the conclusion of the season, Joe was invited and participated in the 1986 Shrine Bowl. During the basketball season, Joe was again selected to the All-Conference team and was again named the conference's Player of the Year. He helped lead his team to the regular season conference championship. Joe's track accomplishments equal those of his other two sports where he found himself on top of the awards stand at the Wyoming State Track Meet. His long jump bested all of the other state qualifiers and, along with his teammates, the 4X400m relay also brought home top honors. Joe's long jump and triple jump efforts set school records and the runner-up finish at the state track meet matched the highest finish for the Punchers at the culminating meet at that time. At the conclusion of the season, Joe was also invited to and participated in the Meet of Champions. Rounding out his accolades, Joe was selected a the 1A/2A Student/Athlete of the Year by the Southwest Administrative District for his accomplishments in both his academic and athletic endeavors.
