Studio Teacher Interview Fall 2010

Telecom- New Media Production Lake Forest High School

Assignment: Have a teacher explain what they are passionate about, what they enjoy about their job or what they do every day that is unique. You will interview them in the studio and shoot b-roll to explain their thoughts and ideas- which could end up on our website.

Due: 5-10 minute studio interview that will be edited down with b-roll, pictures and music to tell a 2-5 minute story.

Goal: To work with a partner, or yourself, to find a good story that you can cultivate and share with a wide audience online. You will learn and follow the production process for studio interviews while building on the experience gained in Final Cut Pro.

Pre- Production Process:

Thursday October 7- Introduce project, create groups, select and contact teachers for pre-interview on Friday, figure out the three topics you would like to talk about, watch examples from last semester's projects

Friday October 8- Conduct pre-interviews with teachers (going over 3 themes and getting a date set), work on 15 questions based on the 3 themes you agreed to talk about

Tuesday October 12 Introduce how the Studio Production process works, email teacher with full 15 questions and firm date

Wednesday October 13- Run through interviews in the studio

Production Process:

Thursday October 14- Shooting studio interviews

Friday October 15- Shooting studio interviews

Monday October 18- make up day for shooting interviews

Post- Production Process:

Tuesday October 19- Wednesday October 28 - cutting down interview to 3-5 minutes to create story

Steps for the Studio Interview Project edit and Rubric:

1. Copy Video from the VS1- Telecom Video-Import Capture-Your Name folder to the Desktop-Your Name Teacher Interview Project.

2. Create a New Project in Final Cut saved to your Desktop- Your Name Teacher Interview Project named Interview with Jack Douglass Steve Douglass 10.18.10.

3. File-Import the video from the desktop-

4. Right Click on the video file, go down to Item Properties- Format… click right below NTSC and check marks should appear next to Anamorphic- this will make your video look like the 16x9 format

5. Watch through your interview in the Viewer to see what you have to keep and cut out- remember you want this to be tight and interesting.

6. Select the In point [ ( ] and Out point [ ) ] of the different questions that you would like to keep and drag them down to the timeline.

7. Organize your clips on the timeline to tell your story. Remember try not to include the question so the story flows more naturally.

8. Trim your clips to make sure the ideas flow- this is hard to do well, so take your time and ask for your partner’s help to make sure things work.

9. Copy the text box below to your Google Site Digital Portfolio to create a Shot Sheet: 25 points – insert this below your questions under the "Teacher Interview Project" page

10. Capture B-roll, on your own tape, into a NEW Final Cut project at the Capture stations and save it on the Telecom Video-Import Capture-Your folder. Then copy JUST the MOV files to your desktop- Your folder and then Import them into your Interview project.

11. Place all of your b-roll on Video 2, 3 or 4- utilize the natural audio if it helps, but don’t let it confuse the interview audio.

13. Dissolve all of you B-roll with the Cross Dissolves in and out of your interview.

14. When you have your interview Final, EXPORT your project to SOUNDTRACK to take out any buzz in the background and add a complementary audio tracks. Then go to Export (make sure it's an AIFF file) and name it yourname-audio back to FCP.

15. Create a title at the end of your interview that matches the feel of your project.

Peer Critique: 25 points— Thursday November 11

16. Continue to add quality B-roll to make your story both Showing and Telling

17. Export your video to the Telecom Video-Final Projects- Your Hour- Interview Project

18. Burn your project in iDVD by following the steps in the How to: video.

Final Project Due to the server Wednesday November 18.
