Prince Philip and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:

A love story lasted over seventy years

Prince Philip was born in June 10, 1921, in Corfu, Greece. After studying in France, Germany and the UK, he joined the Royal Navy in 1939 at the age of 18. In the same year he met Elizabeth and began to correspond with the13-year-old Princess. King George VI, Elizabeth’s father, allowed him to marry her daughter and the marriage to the distant cousin took place in Westminster Abbey on 20 november, 1947. Since, then the Prince renounced his right to the Greek and Danish thrones and became a British citizen. Before the wedding, he was appointed "Her Royal Highness", Duke of Edinburgh. Their first child was Charles, born in 1948, joined by Anne, Andrew and Edward. Philip continued an active service with the Royal Navy until Elizabeth’s accession to the throne on February 6, 1952, after her father’s death. So, he shared Queen Elizabeth’s official and public life, becoming her “Rock”. Philip engaged in a variety of philanthropic activities. He also served as president of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) from 1981 to 1996. In 2011 Elizabeth conferred on him the title of Lord High Admiral, the head of the Royal Navy. In May 2017 it was announced that Philip – who was one of the busiest royals, with more than 22,000 solo appearances over the years-would stop carrying out public engagements, retiring from his public duties. He was the longest-lived consort of a reigning British monarch and the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. He died on 9 April 2021, two months before his 100^th birthday. His funeral took place on 17 April 2021 in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, and he was buried inside St George. Prince Philip will be remembered for his devotion to the Queen. He was always by her side, a few steps behind her, he was her constant strength and guide along the years, living in the shadow of her. They travelled all around the world and faced many challenges together. Theirs was a real love story lasted over seventy years.

Now Her Majesty will carry on without her husband by her side and continue the journey alone.

Il principe Filippo nacque il 10 giugno 1921 a Corfù, in Grecia. Dopo aver studiato in Francia, Germania e Regno Unito, entrò a far parte della Royal Navy nel 1939 all'età di 18 anni. Nello stesso anno incontrò Elisabetta e iniziò a corrispondere con la tredicenne principessa. Re Giorgio VI, padre di Elisabetta, permise a Filippo di sposare sua figlia e il matrimonio con il lontano cugino ebbe luogo nell'Abbazia di Westminster il 20 novembre 1947. Da allora il Principe rinunciò al suo diritto al trono greco e danese e divenne cittadino britannico. Prima del matrimonio, divenne "Sua Altezza Reale", Duca di Edimburgo.
