This year, Liberty High School has had the opportunity to host three foreign exchange students from three different countries. I had the opportunity to sit down with one of these students, Earl Lin, and get to learn a little more about him. Earl is from Taiwan’s capital, Taipei. He is 16 years old and is currently a junior at Liberty. He will be with us for the whole school year.
When I asked Earl about some of the biggest differences between school in the United States and in Taiwan, he said that classes here move “at a much slower pace” than in Taiwan. His favorite subject back home was English. Since coming to the US, Earl has found the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of living in a foreign country. One thing he has liked about people in the US is that they are all very friendly, but he admitted that he doesn’t really like people’s sense of humor here.
Since he has been in the United States, Earl says that he has learned independence. “I do things for myself,” he noted. When I asked him why he chose to come to the United States for school, he said that he his previous perception of America was “like heaven”. He hasn’t been homesick yet and overall, he has enjoyed his time spent with us.
Earl also enjoys playing volleyball and watching Star Wars and Marvel movies.
