As of October 3, more than a quarter of UK mammals are facing the risk of extinction. That is one in seven species. To make matters worse, 41% of species studied have experienced a decline since 1970. What caused the rapid decline of the animals? The answer is climate change. Climate change is any significant long term change in the expected patterns of average weather of a region for a long period of time. Why does that matter and why should you care? That matters because Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner, and animals are dying faster in areas where climate change is occurring.
The way you feel about it is up to you. The loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise, and more intense heat waves. How can we help prevent it? All of us should begin to recycle commonly and use more renewable energy. Simple right, but that's not all you can do to help. Make sure to spread the word and educate others on the topic as much as you can. Now is a better time than ever to reach out about the subject and help our planet during the process.
