The Liberty Leopards traveled to LaBrae this past weekend to play the Vikings in a huge conference showdown. While the Leopards offense performed its role efficiently Friday night, defense was the name of the game as Liberty shut down the Vikings offense to secure a 33-0 victory. The Leopards started strong, forcing a Vikings turn over on their own 22 yard line. Within the minute, Lynn Bowden connected with Ben Phillips for a 22 yard TD pass to give Liberty a 6-0 lead. Near the end of the first quarter, Lynn Bowden again found the end zone on a fake punt run that went for 69 yards. The Leopards defense continued to prevent the Vikings offense from moving down the field. It wasn’t long before Lynn Bowden connected with Phillips for another TD pass, spanning 33 yards, giving the Leopards a 19-0 lead. However, the two weren’t quite done for the half. Following a Leopards interception, Lynn Bowden scrambled deep out of the pocket to yet again find Ben Phillips on a 57 yard TD pass with 33 seconds left to play in the half.
By the start of the third quarter, LaBrae trailed Liberty by a score of 26-0. The Vikings made their way to the Leopards one yard line on a first and goal, only to again be stopped by the ferocious defense of the Leopards. Liberty wasn’t done yet. The Leopards drove down the field, and Alex Carnathan found the end zone for the Leopards again on a two yard TD run, making the score 33-0. For the remainder of the game, the Leopards defense continued to shut down the Vikings offense as the clock ticked down. Lynn Bowden finished 3-8 for 108 yards and three TD’s, all directed towards Ben Phillips. On the ground, Bowden finished with 17 attempts for 138 yards and one TD. The Leopards defense finished with one sack, one interception, and a plethora of tackles in the backfield. Come and support the Leopards at home Friday as they take on the 5-0 Jefferson Falcons!
