IB CHEMISTRY I # 03107H05014 & 03107H05024 Full Year
Prerequisite: Chemistry or Honors Chemistry Fees: $60-$75 for IB Chemistry Course Book Course Grade 11
IB Chemistry courses prepare students to take the International Baccalaureate Biology exams at either the standard level (SL) or the higher level (HL). In keeping with the general aim of IB Experimental Sciences courses, IB Biology promotes understanding of the facts, principles, and concepts underlying the field of chemistry; critical analysis, evaluation, prediction, and generation of scientific information and hypotheses; improved ability to communicate scientific ideas; and an awareness of the impact of chemistry and scientific advances in chemistry upon both society and issues of ethical, philosophical, and political importance. Course content varies, but includes study of materials of the environment, their properties, and their interaction. Laboratory experimentation is an essential part of these courses. Students are required to purchase their textbook at the approximate cost of $70; the text will be used for both years of the course. This is the first year of a 2-year course. This course can be taken by IB students as part of their IB programme and general education students to earn an IB certificate.

Chemistry is often referred to as the central science, combining both the physical
environment we live in with the biological systems it contains. As a result, chemistry
knowledge Is a vital prerequisite to not only understand the world we live in but also to
study other science disciplines like medicine, biological and environmental science.
HL Chemistry is a rigorous 2-year science course that covers core chemistry concepts (atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, energy, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, REDOX, organic chemistry, and stoichiometry) as well as higher level chemistry topics like materials science, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.
A large amount of lab work is included in IB Chemistry, including an internal assessment where students demonstrate the application of their skills and knowledge while at the same time pursue their own interests. Students also take an external assessment that can qualify them for college credit!
