Domestic Robots

Kahmyn Kovac

A domestic robot is a robot that does simple everyday tasks in our life for us in our homes or outside our homes. You may have seen the roomba robots that can sweep the floors in your house for you, but you might be asking how common are these robots in peoples homes. Well according to most sources, about 30-40% of households have at least one domestic robot in their home.

You might be asking who or how the idea of domestic robots started. One of the first domestic home robots was called HERO, fun fact it's a series of robots. This robot was sold during the 1980s and was made by a company called Heathkit. This series of robot duties was used as an education tool to teach people new things(almost like Apples Siri AI). The first HERO is very large, so over time we get to see that humans have improved technology over time.

Another thing that gave the idea of home robots was science fiction. A science fiction novel that started the idea of robots being able to do simple tasks for humans was called “The Future Eve '' By Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. His book had “android like” beings that would replace the main character's wife after she died in a terrible accident. Originally the robots would do a lot of simple tasks like we have in today's day in age where robots do that stuff but in the book the robots evolve to doing much larger tasks.

The house robot category that I researched are lawn mowing robots. The specific model that I studied was the husqvarna automower 430x. This model looks futuristic which is cool. To get it to run you have to download an application on your phone then put the dimensions of your back yard and then set the robot down/turn it on then it will start to cut away at your grass. You have to make sure that your grass is cut short so that the robot can move in the grass, and so that it's grass holder doesn't get full a lot.

In conclusion personally, I would not want a robot like this, just because the technology is so expensive for what you are getting, and because I like to go out and do some lawn work. Another thing to think about is that there can be a lot of issues with the robot itself and the hardware so, thats the big picture that there could be a lot of issues and that's is what leading me to say no I would not buy one right now.
