Drill Press – Safety Rules Jefferson County Public Schools
1. Operate only with instructor’s permission and after you have received instruction. Inform the instructor if this machine is not operating correctly.
2. Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing, and confine long hair.
3. Make sure all guards are in place and operating correctly.
4. Always use proper eye protection and avoid distractions.
5. Make all adjustments with the power off. Exception: Speed changes on variable speed machines should be made only while the machine is running.
6. All tables should be secured before using.
7. Select proper drill type for each job.
8. To avoid injury always remove chuck key immediately after use.
9. Hold material securely with drill pressure vice or clamps.
10. Keep hands away from revolving spindle, chuck, drill and chips.
11. Operate feed handle so that drill cuts evenly into work.
12. Ease up on feed pressure when drill begins to break through material.
13. When finished drilling holes, slowly return feed handle to up position.
14. The drill press should be at a dead stop before attempting to remove work, chips, or cuttings.
15. If a piece of work is caught in the drill, turn off the power. DO NOT TRY TO STOP IT WITH YOUR HAND.
16. Never walk away from drill press when it is still running. Remove drill bit and chuck key when finished.
17. When using a drum sander or rotary files or rasps, the stock should be fed the opposite direction the sander is turning.
