Metal Hydrides

Metal hydrides are compounds of one or more metals cations. They are also metals that are bonded with hydrogen . The reason that metal hydrides were made was because they could store more energy and could withstand more pressure than normal metals. They most common metal hydride is nickel metal hydrides.
The nickel metal hydrides were made because they could store more energy and could store it at higher densities. These batteries also have a much longer life than the average batteries. They are also completely safe and their power output is not affected by the battery state of charge. The components of NiMH batteries include an anode of hydrogen absorbing alloys a cathode of nickel hydroxide and a potassium hydroxide electrolyte.
The negative electrode is made of some hydrides of metal alloys such as nickel and lanthanum. “The metal hydride electrode has a theoretical capacity. Then the cadmium electrode in a nickel-cadmium couple”
Nickel metal hydrides are used to make rechargeable batteries. These batteries are used in car hybrids like the Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid. They can also be used in computer and camera batteries.
