The A class were born from the WAGR unhappy with the X class locos reliability and asked Cylde Engineering to possibly re-engine them. The X class were not that suitable for rebuilding to Clyde constructed 2 new locomotives for the WAGR which were A1501 and A1502 and were more like a standard EMD G12. Later, in 1962 the second delivery of A class took place, the differences being the addition of a large air box on the top of the long hood, behind the cab, no valances and triangular windows above the cab door and opposite cab window. A1513 and A1514 were bought by Western Mining Corporation and were operated by the WAGR who later bought them. A's 1506 and the two mining locos were fitted with dynamic brakes unlike the rest of the class. 3 A class were refurbished into 1200 class in the mid 2000's with one (1203) ending up in South Australia and 1202 eventually having A put back on it's class. A's 1502 - 1510 were sold to TranzRail in New Zealand but were mostly scrapped, A1507 was sent to Tasmania to be used as spare parts and was eventually scrapped while several (A1502, 1503, 1504, 1510 and 1512) were onsold to NRE and rebuilt for FCAB or as gensets.
