AN class

Classing: AN - Australian National

The AN class was ordered by Australian National in the early 1990's from Clyde Engineering and were subsequently built in Somerton Victoria before being transferred to SA on temporary broard gauge bogies and being put onto Standard gauge for traffic. There has only been one write off from the class which was AN10 that was destroyed beyond repair in a collision at Hines Hill in 1996. All of the AN's have since passed into Pacific National ownership and have all been repainted into PN blue and yellow corperate livery save for AN3 which was painted up for GSR's Ghan passenger train colours until 2014. For a short period from July to August in 2004 it had an extra 0 placed in the classing to make it AN03, it was quickly reverted back to it's original number.
