The V/locity is part of the regional fast rail project which is a project to provide better and faster services for regional Victoria. Officially called the "V/locity 160" they are better known as "V/locities". All but one of the sets built are in service. They are also Victoria's first true DMU "Diesel Multiple Unit", Not counting the Sprinters as they can run as a single unit. The V/locities are coupled into a single unit inn two and three car units with a unique numbering system of one car starting with 11 and the second car starting with 12 and if it is a three car it starts with 13, e.g. VL 1 would be 1101-1201 and a three car e.g. VL 41 1141-1341-1241, the middle cars are coded TM. there are also two different types or orders of V/locity with the origional being VL 1 - VL 41 and the second order being VL 0 and VL 42 - VL 51. VL 0 is the only two car version of the second series. The second series can be identified by a red livery and an extra set of head lights above the cab. All of the first series 3 car V/locities entered service as 2 car sets and then re-entered service as 3 car sets excluding VL 41 which entered service as a 3 car and never ran as a 2 car set.
In late 2012 V/line extended the order for 40 new cars. The order included 7 new 3 car sets and 19 new middle cars to convert the whole fleet to 3 cars. In May 2015 funding for an additional 7 three car sets was announced as part of the regional rail link funding and in the 2016 state budget funding was announced for '27 new V/locity carriages' to bring the fleet up to 75 three car sets. A further order for 4 more 3 car sets was added to bring the total to 79 sets until a further order was placed for 9 more 3 car sets, bring the total to 88 three car sets. In late 2018 VL77 was delivered with some modifications to the existing design such as wider wheelchair access doors on the middle car and one less toilet block and was labelled a 'short distance' version of the V/locity. In mid to late 2020 it was announced that an additional 18 new 3 car sets had been ordered, including 6 to be delivered specifically for standard gauge service to Albury, the first time an order was placed specifically for SG. At the time of writing it is unclear how the numbering of the fleet will progress once VL100 is reached
