L class

The L class were built by English Eletric in the UK and shipped to Australia over a period of time. They were given the class L and the existing eletrics were classed E. The L class's had weight issues and were too light compared to their relativly high horsepower rating. Eventually some of the L's were ballasted to give higher adhesive weight to prevent wheelslip. At one point double haeding L's were shorting out a substation on the Taralgon line. One L class had its nose lowered for increased visability. This must not have been too successful as only one loco was modified, that being L1171. Only 4 of this once strong class survive today with only 1 being operational.
