6000 class

Classing: 6000 - Queensland numbering scheme

The 6000 class was built by UGL for QR National. They were purchased because of coming intermodel traffic between Melbourne and Adelaide that QRN had got the contract for. Some were used in hunter coal traffic with the 5000 class for a period of time ujntill the 5020 class entered service. Some 6000 class have been sent to Western Australia and have been reclassed for use within the state. They have been modified to be the Western Australian ACA class and have retained the same numbers with the only modifications being detinator detection and some other minor changes. 6000's that were forwarded for working within Western Australia were 6002, 6005, 6009, 6010, 6011 and 6012, all of which became ACA's. In early 2017 two more C44aci model locomotives were purchased and, according to the ARTC, are classed as 6000 class despite their numbers putting them after the 6020 class and even after the Western Australian ACC class (6030 - 6032) in Aurizons numbering scheme. The reasoning behind the strange numbering is unknown at the time of writing as there is space in the fleet numbers to have put them in the 6013 - 6017 block with the original locomotives yet this was not chosen.
