R class
Classing: R - ???
The privately owned R class were owned by Comalco for Bauxite hauling in northern Queensland on their own standard gauge railway between their mine and the port. All were different in design and had different origins and histories.
R1001, R1002
R's 1001 and 1002 were built by Clyde engineering and are basically a heavy Westrail L class. R1001 was sold alongside R1004 with the introduction of R1005/R1006 into service and was sold to Australian Locolease. R1002 was sold and lightened by Westrail to be of an acceptable weight and became L276 with the addition of dynamic brake. R1002 is now in service on the mainline and has been reclassed LZ 3120 from L276. R1001 was purchased by Australian locolease and was shipped to NSW before being railed to Dynon for lightening and modifications. The loco has re-entered service as L277 but has not had dynamic brake fitted unlike sister R1002 / L276 / LZ3120. It is now on lease to El Zorro.
