JL class

Classing: - JL - J class Leasable/Leasing

The JL class is a result of refurbishing a number of NSW 442 class locomotives and having them renumbered and reclassed. A sixth JL was planned (JL 405) but it was never refurbished or reclassed for reasons unknown. Most of the class has been renumbered back to their former 442 class numbers but one (JL 406) was rebuilt into a GL class (GL 111). The GL class rebuilding project saw 44212 that was earmarked for becoming JL405 never enter service as a JL and was rebuilt. JL406 was also rebuilt without being reclassed back to it's original number. Eventually the idea of having different classes for different operators was canned and the remaining JL's (401 - 404) reverted back to their original 442 class numbers.

The reclassing was as follows:

44204  - JL401

44206 - JL402

44208 - JL403

44209 - JL404

44212 - was to become JL405, never eventuated.

44232 - JL406
