N class

The N class were put into service under V/line and have remained with V/line ever since running passenger services. They are equipped with head end power thus their trains not needing a power van when running. They have all been named after rural Victorian Cities and towns. The latter series (461 - 475) Were fitted with different engines after the cancellation of the A class project and the orderd parts being used to build new N classes. They have provided service in the front line of passenger duty for 25 years and have even made it as far as Adelaide on The Overland services back when V/line ran those services. They were also built with a band resistant frams so in the advent of a collision (with a motor vehicle or low speed) the frame would stay aligned. This has proved to be very useful as being at the head of trains for 25 years not one has been written off even after some pretty nasty accidents. Some locomotives have been fitted with EMD D77 traction motors with these locomotives weighing 128t instead of the usual 124t. N's with D77 traction motors fitted are N451, N453, N460, N463, N465, N468, N469, N470, N471, N472, N473 and N474
