GM class

Classing: GM - General Motors

The GM class were the first diesel electric locomotives built in Australia, being built by Clyde Engineering in Granville. The first series GM's are also referred to as the  "GM F class" due to them having only four traction motors whereas the second series GM's are referred to as the "GM S class" because they have six traction motors.

GM30 was stripped back to a frame and was put in for rebuild. It had a modified roofline, new engine and most of the internals fitted before work stopped. In 2013 the half rebuilt and stripped locomotive was taken for scrap in WA. It was to be numbered GN3401.

GM25 was owned by Gemco Dynon and was progressively stripped for parts over a number of years until it was just an empty shell. A private buyer purchased the empty shell for $1,000 in 2013 and aims to turn it into a bar in central Victoria.
