X class

In the 1960's the VR was in a locomotive shortage and so VR ordered the X class. The first series was mechanically identical to the S class. When built the 2nd and 3rd series were fitted with the higher power 645 series engines when they bacame available to Clyde. The differences between the different series are minor but noticable, thde first had the smaller radiators and the second had the slightly larger radiators hence the bigger engine. The third series had a redasigned cab with a more angular nose and C class like widely spaced windscreens and the removal of the front cab door. The horns were also placed under the number boards and were a different type to the earlier series. During Freight Australia ownership 2 of the 3rd series X's had their cab ends modified with slightly lowered noses (the top of the nose was chopped down) and widened cab windows simmilar to an XR class has. The horns were also changed and repositioned to behind the cab like the earlier versions. Locos known to have these mods are X47, and X49. All 3rd series have had their 3 chime horns replaced with 5 chime horns and had them mounted on the nose. In early 2000's while under Freight Australia control they Rebuilt some of the X class into XR class with surpluss G class engines after the rebuilds.
