NR class
Classing: NR - National Rail (Original Buyer)
The NR class was introduced by National Rail in 1996 to be used on national rail services across Australia. They are probably the most numerous national locomotive class in Australia. There were 120 NR's built but the numbering goes up to 121 because one locomotive, NR3, was renumbered to 121 after rebuilding from a collision. Several NR's were painted into special Liveries for working on Great Southern Rail (GSR) passenger trains. All NR's are on standard gauge and have always been on this gauge since introduced to service. NR80 was renumbered to NR122 in 2021 after an accident in 2020 where the crew passed in the cab after rear ending a grain train in Western Australia
