The 44 class were used as a general purpose mainline locomotive that worked both freight and passenger working across most of the NSW network. A total of 100 locomotives were built by AE Goodwin for the NSWGR over 10 years, between 1957 and 1967. Now only 19 of them remain with both preservation groups and commercial operators with a number in and out of storage.
