The RT class was the only class of rail tractor to run in Victoria hence the classing RT. The rail tractors had a few variations within the class including different engine types and sand box lacations hewever there were some second hand vehicles that were built to different designs to the standard tractors. RT1 was of a different design to all other tractors having been built as a prototype vehicle in the 1930's. RT46 was different in that it had a full height hood over a larger engine and was purchased second hand from the Portland Harbour trust and was previously PHT 2. RT54 was the only vehicle in the class to be equipped with train brake and was another different design. It featured a long thin hood over the engine and was built on a longer frame to other tractors. It was formally PHT 4 before being purchased by the VR.
