422 class

The 422 class was the first use of the EMD 645 engine in NSW. The locomotives were built by Clyde Engineering in Granville and delivered to the NSWGR. They were all withdrawn by FreightCorp in 1997 and 2000 and were subsequently sold. Many of the class were purchased by ARG and refurbished into 22 class locomotives. 42209 and 42211 were to be refurbished into 2209 and 2211 respectively but this never eventuated and have been stored and used for spare parts. With the ARG and GWA split the class was divided up between the two of them with the ARG locomtoives beiong reclassed DC for WA operations. The only locomotives in service with their original numbers are the two QRN own units, 42202 and 42206. 42220 was fitted with super series wheel slip control and was uneque in the class. It has now been purchased by CFCLA and renumbered to the sole FL class. 42203 has also been reclassed to the sole HL class for leasing duties with CFCLA. In late July 2015 42209 became the first of the class to meet the scrappers torch, being cut up in Western Australia after being used as a source of spare parts for many years by Aurizon. A few months prior to 42209's disposal Aurizon exported a number of 22 class and 42211 to South Africa.
