Currently, over 350 college basketball teams are competing to make the madness last into March. But only the best of the best can hold a record, with countless teams in Division One college basketball. What team has the most wins, and what player has scored the most points? Most importantly, who will break the record next?
Men's basketball record holders are as follows.
Most Points - Pete Maravich (Louisiana State, 1968-1970)
Pete Maravich was a top scorer in college. Though his accomplishments in the NBA weren’t as great, his record in college has been unbeaten for over fifty years! His dominance is harder to replicate with better defenders and strategies for guarding deep shots.
Most Assists - Bobby Hurley (Duke, 1990-1993)
Bobby Hurley had an astounding 1076 assists throughout his career. He led Duke to two consecutive NCAA championship wins and 4 consecutive appearances. He went on to play in the NBA for a few seasons before retiring. Even though his record looks daunting, there is one person who could break it this season. Braden Smith of Purdue could break it this season if he gets lucky.
Most rebounds - Tom Gola (La Salle, 1952-1955)
La Salle won a championship once when Tom Gola was on the team. He went on to play in the NBA, winning another championship before retiring. His record is another one that may be unbroken for a long time. With taller and taller players, rebounds are getting more competitive and harder to secure as the years go on.
Now moving on to women's basketball.
Most Points - Caitlin Clark (Iowa, 2021-2024)
What a surprise, Caitlin Clark has the record. She scored 3951 points throughout her career. She won too many awards in college to mention here. If you want to look up a random NCAA basketball award, she has probably won it. She has dominated in professional play so far and will probably break some records there. Finding out if anyone might break women’s basketball records is almost impossible because every article is about Clark.
Most Assists - Suzie McConnell Serio (Penn State, 1985-1988)
Suzie McConnell Serio holds the record with 1307 assists. She had an amazing career in college. She went on to play in the WNBA before becoming a successful head coach in 2018.
Most Rebounds - Courtney Paris (Oklahoma, 2006-2009)
Courtney Paris’s record is 2034 rebounds. She led the under-19 national team to a gold medal as the lead scorer. She played in the WNBA for over ten seasons, though she was not as outstanding as in college.
Players aren’t the only ones who can break records, as teams can too. In men's basketball, UCLA has won eleven championships. In women’s basketball, UConn has won twelve championships and holds the ultimate honor of most titles.
In conclusion, while a lot of these records may seem unbreakable, it is still possible that people can surprise and do the unthinkable.
