.Introduction
Purpose
The document GNM_RCS_Content_Processing_FS.docx is the functional specification that describes what business functions RCS supports in relation to processing published content.
This document is one of a set of technical specifications that provide details of how those functions are implemented in RCS.
Scope
This document focusses on the processing that supports searches for content in RCS. Separate documents deal with all other aspects of content processing in RCS, including print & web content processing, specials, matching, and AV products.
This document does not refer to other searches that can be done on the website or on GNM’s internal Editnet platform – it just looks at searches within RCS.
This document is intended as a high-level technical document outlining how the relevant business functions are implemented in terms of software modules.
Importantly, this document does not aim to provide the level of detail that would be required in a programming specification in areas such as program structure, detailed business rules, data integrity, validation, locking considerations, data security, and calls to/from other software modules, performance considerations, and so forth.
For details of program logic and coding, the reader should refer to the program files themselves.
.Search for published content screen
RCS users (including SLM users) often need to find out how an item of content was processed. The Search for published content screen allows users to enter the criteria of their search, press “Find”, and the review to results that are returned.
The Oracle Form is called rcs_mtrl_020_pc.fmb and is accessed from this menu option:
Content → Search for published content
The search criteria change according to the choice of publication and the choice of format. When searching for content on the website (theguardian.com) a URL is available and also a element ID; for print publications there is a page number field. For images (Pictures and Artwork) the user can enter a PicDar URN but not for other formats.
The search results section of the screen also shows slightly different fields according to the format – a word count field for text and an area field for images. The screenshot below shows the fields displayed when Artwork is searched for on the website:
Contributor
The “Contributor…” button shows the contributor details for a match.
Alerts
The “Alerts…” button shows a new window that lists the alerts recorded against the highlighted item of content. The allowable Notice types are shown in the screenshot below:
Matches and Rights
The “Matches and Rights…” button pops up a window in which any matches to the content are displayed, from where the rights window can be shown for each match listed:
Sales
The “Sales…” button shows the details of any licenses agreed or pending for the highlighted content:
View content
The “View…” button shows the web page for web content, or the PDF for print content.
Directory
The “Directory…” button shows a list of values that contains all contributors. This list is only used as an aide-mémoir. The user can scroll through to find who they are looking for as shown below:
Emails
The “Emails” button pops up a window, shown below, that lists any email alerts that have been sent about an item of content:
Web content contributor tags
For web content that has contributor tags a minimized window can be activated to review the details of those tags, as shown below:
The two buttons in this window allow the user to see/edit the contributor’s details in RCS, and to view the contributor’s profile page on the website.
.Matching history screen
The Matching history screen provides much the same functionality as the Search for published content screen, except in the following respects:
Searches can be restricted to any combination of Uncleared, Unprocessed, Matched or Disregarded items, by clicking on the corresponding checkboxes in the Search criteria;
Search results are grouped by department, with one department visible at a time;
Queries can be recorded against the content; and
Content can be staffed/unstaffed, matched/unmatched, or disregarded/reinstated.
The Oracle Form is called rcs_mtrl_010_pc.fmb and is accessed from this menu option:
Content → Matching history
Where the features of this screen are the same as described for the Search for published content screen please refer to the relevant section of this document. The following sub-sections describe the extra features that are specific to this screen.
NB An item of content can be staffed and matched (one or more times) at the same time, but if it has been disregarded it cannot be staffed or matched until it has been reinstated.
Match/Un-match
The “Match” button is enabled if the highlighted item of content has not been disregarded. Pressing this button opens the Content matching screen with only this item of content queried.
The “Un-match” button is enabled only if the highlighted item of content has been matched.
Staff/Un-staff
The “Staff” button is enabled if the highlighted item of content has not been disregarded or staffed.
If an attempt is made to staff content where the by-line/caption on the content matches the name of a freelance content provider in RCS then the user receives a warning:
The “Un-staff” button is enabled if the highlighted item of content has been staffed.
Disregard/Reinstate
The “Disregard” button is enabled if the highlighted item of content has not been processed at all i.e. not matched, not staffed and not disregarded.
When disregarding an item of content the user must specify why they are disregarding it by choosing a reason from the following list:
The selection made determines the rights profile applied to the content.
If an attempt is made to disregard content where the by-line/caption on the content matches the name of a content provider in RCS then the user receives a warning:
The “Reinstate” button is enabled if the highlighted item of content has been disregarded.

Keywords (or tags) are important to provide accurate search results. They are vital if you have attached rather than pasted content to this page.
